I love, love, love a good smoothie. I actually think I may be going through smoothie withdrawal right now. Protein drinks just don’t have the same panache. This is one food that was hard for me to give up when I started to train for the Figure Competition.
Awhile back, I stumbled across this website – Green Monster Movement. Yup, spinach smoothies!
I nearly gagged just looking at the pictures, but then I thought ‘What the heck? I should give this a whirl!”. The very next day at the the grocery store I purchased the necessary ingredients – spinach, bananas, and frozen berries.
Then I blended with trepidation.
My green monster turned brown….strawberries and spinach will do that. I should have remembered my colors from Kindergarten. Oops!
It tasted great; couldn’t even tell there was spinach in it.
My favorite Green Monster combo is as follows:
- Big handful of spinach
- 1 banana (you MUST use a banana, it covers up the spinach)
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries
- scoop of vanilla protein powder
- 1/2 cup of light coconut milk
- 1/2 cup water
Note: If its too thick, just add a bit of water until its blending well. DON’T stick a spoon in it while it’s blending…things tend to get a little too interesting if you do that.
Tasty!
There are tons of recipes for Green Monsters. So who’s going to be brave and try one? I can’t enjoy these right now because I’m on a super low carb diet, but I will live vicariously through you.
And don’t worry if you have to drink it with your eyes closed the first time, that’s how I did it!
Let me know if you give it a try.
Another great recipe. Thanks so much, I’ll definitely try it. My last trainer told me to stop eating bananas though. So I haven’t had one since May! I used to have them in my smoothie everyday!
Do you have nutritional info? (calories, carbs, protein, etc)
Another tip: Don’t stick your hand in the blender until the blade is FULLY stopped. I learned this the hard way when I was 10 and had to get a few stitches on my finger!
You stuck you HAND in the blender? OY VEY!
Perhaps try the recipe with half a banana…it should only be about 20 carbs for the banana and the spinach should keep it from going straight to sugar in your body. Or at least that’s what I tell myself.
Nutritional information – I will try to pull that together for you tomorrow. 🙂
