The Yams of Life
Posted on 05 January 2010
Have you ever met someone and something about them drives you crazy, but you just can’t figure out what it is?
It’s socially unacceptable to be honest and say something like: “You know…I just don’t really like you. I don’t think we are going to be friends.”
In the effort to rid myself of ‘Happy Arms’ this year I have started to eat only primal foods. This means I eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, meat, eggs, and small amounts of dark chocolate.
During this endeavor I have met a vegetable that drives me crazy and I just can’t figure out what it is.
Yams. I hate them.
White potatoes are supposedly bad for you because they turn into sugar as soon as you eat them. So I have turned to yams for a potato alternative. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the yam is the relative that everyone is ashamed of and is only invited to Christmas dinner because everyone feels sorry for them.
They masquerade as a potato, but are so sweet that they cause you to gag.
So I have decided to be honest with all the yams out there. “You know…I just don’t really like you. I don’t think we are going to be friends.”
I have put all the yams in my house where they belong.
Primal eating is officially yam-free at my house.
Do you have a yam in your life that you need to be honest with?

I hate yams too!!!
Good! We should start a ‘We Hate Yams” group. After that we will tackle static. Deal?!
Hey…what makes them even worse is when you are not primal eating and it is served with lots of brown sugar with marshmellows melted on top. Just pass the stuffing and mashed potatoes please and leave the yams in the garden where they belong.
You know what try buying sweet potatoes rather than yams you will probably like them better. They are smaller and have a redder skin and are not as sweet tasting. Try roasting them in the oven. Make them chunk size with a little olive oil and lots of onion and garlic, and some thyme and rosemary and black pepper. At the end of the cooking throw in a red pepper just to heat but remain crisp.
Of course we like yams in our household especially Bethany who used to want yams and hotdogs for her birthday party food when she was grade 2. All the kids thought it was odd but the massive candy cake balanced it out!
I’ve tried both yams and sweet potatoes…I like neither. I’ve even tried roasting them as you’ve suggested and I still couldn’t handle them. They are both in the same class as tofu and broccoli for me. Sorry!
