Naturally Baked

Posted on 09 August 2009

In my quest to be healthy, I purchased some baked Doritos as a treat.  Doritos are my absolute favorite chip – especially the zesty flavored ones.  While munching away I noticed an odd claim on the bag.  The bag boldly states that they are ‘Naturally Baked’.

What the world does that mean?  Is there an un-natural baking of chips going on out in the chip world?  Should I be asking if my chips have been baked in a natural way before eating them?  What would constitute an un-natural baking?  Perhaps if the potato had visited a tanning bed previous to becoming a chip, they could be classified as fake and bake…but other than that I have no idea…

As far as baking goes, doesn’t it usually involve the item being placed in a hot oven for a set amount of time and nothing else?  Perhaps these chips are baked in a stone oven made from pure elements of the earth without any intervention from the outside such as a heat regulator.

I wonder why they are so concerned about the natural baking process when they have ingredients like Disodium Guanylate and Calcium Hydroxide in the chip.  Perhaps it’s to make us think that we are ingesting real food.

Who knows?  If I went to the local bakery and asked about their ‘natural baking process’ I would probably be laughed right out of the bakery and never be able to go back.  I just can’t take that risk, so I will just enjoy the naturally baked chip with the un-natural ingredients!  Mmmm….
